Hampson's Summer Spent In The Gym

GEORGE HAMPSON is under no illusions that a summer in the gym is the final piece of the puzzle that will see him become a league regular.
After arriving at the Lions for the 2011 pre-season a relative unknown from Scarborough in the amateur ranks, Hampson was almost the story of the year as he burst onto the league scene late in the year.
Having made his debut in Esperance in round 16, he played round 24 and was a part of both the Lions Preliminary Final victory over West Perth and Grand Final loss to Claremont.
A natural athlete, Hampson has dominated the endurance running since arriving at the club but said that is both a blessing and a curse.
“My fitness has always been there it’s just the weight I can’t keep on if I don’t get in the gym,” he said.
“I’ve been trying to hit the gym three times a week… I’ve just been getting in there and doing the right things.
“You’ve got to make sure you keep the intensity up in training as well because if you’re just doing soft training it’s got nothing to do with your football, you’ve got to get sweaty and get your body working hard.”
It was quite a ride for Hampson to arrive at Medibank Stadium; from age 16 to 20 across five seasons of amateur football Hampson only managed 30 games of football due to a horror run of injury including reoccurring knee problems.
And the 21-year-old said when he finally realised his league dream it was quite an eye-opener.
“Faster, more intense, bigger bodies,” was his immediate response when asked how he found his four games in the league side.
“Everyone is just trying to help their teammates out a little more than in the twos, it’s a more of a team orientated flow of the game,” he added.
“The drive off the half back line is more prominent too.”
The recognition of the team aspect of the game wasn ‘t lost on Scarborough recruit as he quickly turned attention away from himself and focused on the group.
“Everyone is here to work hard and work together. Obviously went to the grand final last but didn’t get the big win so everyone’s looking for bigger and better things this year.”
Hampson who has long been recognized as a hard-running player with a creative goal sense said his preparations are again for the forward line in 2012.
“Again, I just need to get strong, focus on a few little areas and it should be a good season."
